Music Video Flicker Effect

We’ve all seen it at least once. You watch a music video and one of the effects you see is a strobe like frame by frame flash that goes to the beat. As requested, we’ll be taking a look at how to do just that in Vegas Pro 12. We’ll be using general features not bound to just Vegas Pro so feel free to apply these techniques to your favorite editing platform.

Let’s take a look at Color Matching in Sony Vegas Pro 12. This new plugin added through Event-FX, allows for you to match the color between clips. It can be used to match two or more cameras shooting the same scene, or for adding a single color effect to multiple clips.

Vegas Pro 12: Color Match

How to Use Color Match

Vegas Pro 12: Color Match

Apply the “Sony Color Match” effect to the clip you’d like to process. This can be applied to a media, event, track, or video output effect.

They’ve added a few presets to use but since we’re trying to match the color between clips, these won’t be necessary.

First, select an image source with one of the following methods;

 • Use Trimmer Image (Uses the current snapshop in the Trimmer window.)
 • Paste from Clipboard (Pastes a Copied Snapshot in from the clipboard.)
 • Browse for Image (Browse for an image file.)
 • Clip from Screen (Capture a source image from anywhere on your screen.)

Next, adjust the strength of the effect. This will adjust the amount of color or lightness applied to your video.

Selecting the Process Lightness check box will attempt to match the brightness and contrast of the source image. In the case the effect comes out too strong, you can manually adjust that with the other Vegas plug-ins as needed.

YouTube recently began slowly rolling out new channel layouts. It’s currently in limited beta so only a select few are able to use it. Over the upcoming weeks, we should see it available for everyone to use. The new layout highly resembles YouTube’s latest design updates heading more toward the Google Plus look. Download the template below!

The channels currently using the new layout are iJustine, DeStorm, EpicMealTime, SORTED, MysteryGuitarMan, LOUD and Geek & Sundry.

New YouTube Layout

Unsubcribed Trailer

On the new channel layout, you can create a trailer only visible to those who are not currently subscribed to your channel. This way, you can show new visitors what your channel has to offer and why they should subscribe.

Featured Videos

You’re provided with a much more elaborate way of displaying your uploads. You can now display your videos by specific tags. Just type in a tag and all videos tagged with that will appear.

Channel Art

You may now upload and place a header image similar to that of Google Plus or Facebook. This image is responsive and will display on all devices from TVs to your phone. I’ve provided a Photoshop template to help you get started.

New YouTube Layout

Responsive Dimensions:

Full Size / TV: 2120 X 1192 px (Recommended)

Desktop: 2120 X 350 px

Tablet: 1536 X 350 px

Vegas Pro 12: Expanded Edit Mode http://robertsproductions.net/vegas-pro-12-expanded-edit-mode/ http://robertsproductions.net/vegas-pro-12-expanded-edit-mode/#comments Thu, 31 Jan 2013 20:30:32 +0000 Robert Carreno http://robertsproductions.net/?p=5539 ...read more →

The post Vegas Pro 12: Expanded Edit Mode appeared first on Robert's Productions | Free Video Training.

]]>
Let’s take a look at the new Expanded Edit Mode introduced in Vegas Pro 12. This mode aims at providing you with a faster, more accurate method of trimming events. While always there as the “Adjacent Trim Tool”, the Expanded Edit Mode was created for users to better see and adjust edits more effectively. Great for multicamera scenes and precise edits such commentary projects.

Opening the Expanded Edit Mode

As with many things in Sony Vegas, there’s all kinds of ways for you to access the Expanded Edit Mode. Here’s how;

 • Go to Edit > Select > Expanded Edit Mode
 • Press 5 on the numeric keypad
 • Double-click the event edge

Layout

Vegas Pro 12: Expanded Edit Mode

You’ll notice events are now laid out differently in A/B roll tracks.

Events before the edit point are displayed on the A roll track while all the following events are placed on the B roll track.

Vegas Pro 12: Expanded Edit Mode

The greyed out areas just show the rest of the events so you can get an idea of how much footage you have to work with.

Red brackets [ ] indicate which event edge will be trimmed if you’re editing with the numeric keypad. We’ll get into editing with the numeric keys in a future tutorial.

Vegas Pro 12: Expanded Edit Mode

In and out points are displayed as a split screen in the Video Preview window. Once you preview your edits, this will go back into single view.

Making Edits

Making edits is roughly the same as in the regular editing window. You can adjust the edits separately by dragging each one over or all together simultaneously by dragging between the two events.

Here you can also use the Adjacent Trim (Ctrl + Alt) tool to achieve the same simultaneous movement.

You can also adjust and add transitions as needed.

Vegas Pro 12: Expanded Edit Mode

Exiting the Expanded Edit Mode

Exiting Expanded Edit Mode is the same as what you did to enter it;

 • Edit > Select > Exit Expanded Edit Mode
 • Press 5 on the numeric keypad
 • Double-click the event edge
 • Press Exc.

Overall, this new Expanded Edit Mode can be very useful when getting cuts just right. Although, I don’t see myself using it often. The Adjacent Trim tool seems to do the trick most times. Though, It would definitely help if you do a lot of multicamera work. Do you think this is something you’d find yourself using a lot? Let us know in the comments!

Disable Screensaver While Certain Apps Are Open

In this weeks Windows Tip, we’ll take a look at a small application that can disable your screensaver while certain apps are open. So you’re sitting at your desk maybe doing homework and your screens shut off or those bubbles start to appear when you’re taking notes. With Cyber-D’s AntiScreensaver, you can automatically disable the screensaver when a web browser or word document is open. You can even chose specific websites that will disable your screensaver.

Usage:

Simply download it from Cyber-D’s blogspot, and install. The installer won’t ask you to install any other annoying programs like most freeware does.

Open it up and add which programs you’d like to disable the screensaver. Everything added here will disable the screensaver once they’re opened.

AntiScreensaver sits in your taskbar and will launch when Windows starts so once you set it you can forget about it. To exit, right click it in your taskbar and chose Exit. To disable it from opening when Windows starts, un-tick it in your startup script.

Get AntiScreensaver >>

Update: To remove Cyber D’s AntiScreensaver, uninstall the program if it is located in your program list and delete the folder in C:\Program Files (x86)\Cyber D’s AntiScreensaver where C:\ is the path to your installation folder (May be different for you).

A little over a year ago, we took a look at adding a logo inside a QR code in Photoshop. However, we left that QR code in its original color, black. Today, we’ll be taking that a step further to show you how to colorize your very own QR code!

Video

Photoshop: Colorize QR Code

There are endless possibilities when it comes to colorizing a QR code. Take a look at some of the designs over at QRLicious for inspiration.

QR Code

We’ll begin by creating our QR code. I used goqr.me to generate mine. QR codes can contain anything from a little message to a link. I just linked it to the website for now. However, if you have a very long link be sure to use a link shortener such as bit.ly to simplify the code a bit.

Photoshop: Colorize QR Code

Once complete, you may adjust the size of the code. Click on Options and change the Error Correction Code to “Q” or “H” depending on what works best with your final logo. The Error Correction Code adjust how much of the QR code can be covered with it remaining readable. Download the code to your computer.

Photoshop: Colorize QR Code

Photoshop

Create a new document and adjust the size to fit your needs. I chose 1000 x 1000 px.

Photoshop: Colorize QR Code

I added a radial gradient to the background, but you may leave it white or transparent depending on where you plan on placing the QR code.

Drag (or File > Place) the QR code file you’ve just downloaded into this new Photoshop document. Adjust the size and center it.

Photoshop: Colorize QR Code

To center, simply select the QR code layer and hold Ctrl to select the background layer. With both the QR code and background layers selected, use the move tool to center everything vertically and horizontally.

Photoshop: Colorize QR Code

We now need to Rasterize the QR code layer since it is currently a Smart Object. To do this, Right-click the QR code layer and choose Rasterize Layer. Now we can delete the white background.

Photoshop: Colorize QR Code

Select > Color Range click the white background within the QR code.

Photoshop: Colorize QR Code

Choose a Fuzziness of around 100. Click OK. Everything that’s white in the image will be selected. With the QR code layer selected, hit Delete. You’ll notice all of the white has been deleted. Now you can hit Ctrl + D or Cmd + D(Mac) to deselect the selection.

Photoshop: Colorize QR Code

All that’s left to do is to stylize the QR code with Layer Styles. Double-click the QR code layer or right-click and choose Blending Options. Here you can add anything from a Bevel & Emboss to a Drop Shadow. Keep in mind that some of these changes may effect the readability of the code so keep testing it while designing.

Photoshop: Colorize QR Code

I added a dark navy blue #031634 to light navy blue #033649 Linear GradientAgain you can add any of the styles here as long as everything’s still readable by devices.

Photoshop: Colorize QR Code

You can also experiment with the different Artistic filters to stylize the code a bit. And even add a design within the three squares of the code. Make sure it’s still readable!

Photoshop: Colorize QR Code

That’s it! We’ve added some color to the QR code making it much more appealing.

Post your QR code creations in the comments section below!
